Happy New Year! Happy Yogi New Year! On April 14th 2011 the Vedic Solar New Year begins! It is known as the Tamil New Year. This date is celebrated throughout several countries including Nepal and India.
In the Vedic culture it is believed that on this date Brahma started the creation of the Universe. We experience this with the arrival of spring, all the new life being born, new and fresh beginnings, such as fresh flowers, new crops, and everything else that springtime brings.
The Tamil New Year is considered to be the most auspicious and sacred time to start on a new venture. It is the festival of colorful and diverse shades.
The celebrations for the Tamil New Year last about a week. Numerous rituals are used including women and children making colorful rangolis and floral designs. Prayers and pujas are offered for wealth, health and prosperity. Homes are being cleaned and decorated with fresh mango leaves and neem is used to make the environment healthy. On the day itself, April 14th this year, people will prepare themselves by waking up early and bathing. Then the celebrations will begin.
Tamil bears an artistic significance as well. The festivals bring a great platform for aspiring poets, artists, and musicians to display their talents.
People also take the opportunity to exchange gifts, gather for family get-togethers, community events, thereby spreading love and joy.
But the most significant fact about the Tamil New Year is the message it offers: “All the experience that we have, good or bad must be treated with absolute equanimity. Whatever happens through out the year must be taken up calmly and faced gracefully. We should learn to rise above the happiness and sorrows, failure and success and be grateful for our high moments and graceful in our low moments.”
